India’s infrastructure sector faced the biggest hit amid COVID-19 crisis. In April 2020, steel output fell by 84.6pc and cement output dropped by 86pc, according to Ministry of Commerce and Industry data. Coal output in the month dropped by 22pc.
Construction activities in the country have come to a halt due to lockdown imposed by the government to combat the pandemic. Shortage of casual labour has also disrupted the supply chain which triggered concerns among manufacturers. Moreover, the impending monsoon would further dampen the construction and infrastructure segments.
Amid COVID-19 related lockdown across the country, the core sector output contracted by 38pc in April 2020 from the prior year period following a 9pc drop in March 2020.
