Hyundai Motors’ Alabama facility and Kia’s plants in Georgia and Alabama have extended their production cuts until Sep 3 amid the ongoing shortage of semiconductor chips.

The companies had reduced production at their plant on Aug 20 with the expectation to resume on Aug 30, but have since then reduced their outlook on vehicle production and sales due to the extended downtimes owing to the chip shortage.

Kia America, which had announced an increase in sales last month expects to return to full production by Sep 7, per media reports.

Hyundai can produce 7,600 units weekly at its Alabama facility while Kia 6,550 units at its plants. Automobile consultants estimate a reduction in the North American vehicle output in 2021 to 1.83 million units.
