LKAB, SSAB, and Vattenfall have test produced 100mt of the world’s first hydrogen reduced sponge iron at its Lulea plant in Sweden, under the HYBRIT initiative.

The use of fossil-free hydrogen gas will help reduce 90pc of the total emissions in steelmaking, the company said in a statement. The companies aim to achieve an industrial-scale production of fossil-free steel by 2026 at their Gallivare plant in Sweden.

With the development of such steel, LKAB anticipates higher exports and hopes to strengthen its competitiveness, the company said in a statement on Monday.
