Given India’s 21-day COVID-19 lockdown, Hindalco announced that the company has temporarily scaled down operations at aluminium and copper manufacturing facilities across the country.
The company further said that any ongoing operations are being managed with minimal staff as part of an effort to practice social distancing.
The press statement mentions that several measures have been taken to protect the health and safety of the workforce.
In the US, Hindalco’s subsidiary Novelis, has also partially shutdown some of its plants as a result of temporary measures in place by US automakers, in response to COVID-19. The company has temporarily reduced aluminium supply to the automotive market.
Novelis will continue to produce aluminium for the beverage can and specialty markets.
All-India operations
Hindalco an integrated primary aluminium producer, involved in bauxite mining to downstream rolling, has its integrated complex at Renukoot, in Uttar Pradesh, India.
An aluminium smelter and an aluminium FRP facility (for rolled products, extrusions products and wire rods) are run at Hirakud (Odisha) with a captive power plant and coal mine, and alumina refinery at Muri (Jharkhand).
Hindalco’s chemical grade alumina plant is located at Belagavi (Karnataka), and rolling mills at Belur (West Bengal), Taloja near Mumbai and Mouda near Nagpur (Maharashtra).
Foil rolling facilities are situated at Mouda near Nagpur (Maharashtra) and Kollur (Telangana) and an extrusion plant is at Alupuram (Kerala).
Hindalco’s new age smelters are at Aditya (Odisha) and Mahan (Madhya Pradesh). Utkal Alumina (Odisha) houses Hindialco’s refinery.
Copper
Hindalco’s Birla Copper is located at Dahej in the state of Gujarat (west coast of India) The facility has three copper smelters, three refineries, two-rod plants and a captive power plant.
