Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

HBIS Laoting Iron & Steel launched the recently installed high-performance hot strip mill supplied by SMS Group, producing flat coiled products with an annual capacity of 4.1mn mt. The mill conducted its first hot strip coiling in August 2020 and is now fully commissioned. The mill has a production goal of 1.48mn mt of crude steel and 1.42mn mt of finished steel by the end of 2020.

Specifications for the hot strip are 1.2-25.4mm in thickness and up to 1,900mm in width. HBIS produces high-strength automotive grades, structural and container steels, piping material, and low-allow carbon steels. The mill contains a roughing mill descaler, slab-sizing press, roughing mill edger, finishing descaler, and a seven-stand finishing mill with a cooling system. Of the three down coilers, one is designed for thicker, high-strength strips.

HBIS Laoting is part of the HBIS Group and was founded in 2017 to transfer steel capacities out of heavily polluted cities to smaller hubs. The revamping of the capacities with modern technology allows the company to move towards green steel production. The total long-term annual crude steel capacity for Laoting will be 7.47mn mt, giving rise to 7.1mn mt of finished steel per year.
