Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) indefinitely suspended mining operations in Zambia on Wednesday. However, the Glencore subsidiary will keep processing material in its smelter and refinery.

The firm said that a confluence of declining copper prices and impeded international mobility—specifically to its supply chain—led to the decision. However, the company’s decision to go on care and maintenance drew censure from Zambia’s government, which previously rejected the miner’s bid to declare force majeure.

Although no definite date has been set for resumption of mining activities, it is believed the moratorium will last for at least three months. MCM has stated it remains in discussions with the Zambian government and labor unions about the mine workforce.
