Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Gerdau Diaco will implement a comprehensive strategy to transport 2,000mt of steel from Barranquilla to the Cundinamarca province, in which the main stage will be by ship through the Magdalena river, the company reported.

The Colombian steelmaker explained that the trip down the river will take eight days to the city of Barrancabermeja; from there, Gerdau will transport the cargo by road to its mill in the municipality of Sibaté, Cundinamarca.

Gerdau Diaco has already used this form of transportation 37 times, mobilizing 175,000mt of steel through the Magdalena River between 2013 and 2019. This represents 26pc of its total annual imports.

Ricardo Carmona, logistics manager, Gerdau Diaco, considered that the different types of transport — river, rail, and road — should complement each other, in an agile and efficient chain.
