Canadian miner FPX Nickel has developed a high-concentration nickel-cobalt solution for use in electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
In 2021, the miner intends to become a significant supplier to the EV battery market by providing the solution to battery makers. It owns the Baptiste nickel deposit in British Columbia, Canada. According to a preliminary economic assessment, the miner plans to produce close to 45,000mt of nickel per year from the mine at an ore throughput rate of 120,000mt per day.
FPX plans to establish a zero-carbon mining operation at the Baptiste Project which is estimated to hold 1.9bn mt of mineral reserves, grading at 0.12pc nickel, with estimated nickel content around 2.4mn mt. The mine will have a 35-year operational life.
