Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Russian holding company En+ Group has announced that Rusal produced aluminum at a carbon footprint of less than 0.01 ton/mt of aluminum produced, covering both stage 1 and 2 emissions.

Rusal, the second-largest aluminum producer in the world, produces low-carbon aluminum under its Allow brand, which currently operates at a footprint of less than 8t of CO2/mt of aluminum. The new metal was produced at the company’s Krasnoyarsk (KrAZ) plant using the inert anode cells, which the company has been testing since 2017.

The use of inert anode cells replaces carbon anodes, thus drastically reducing the carbon footprint in the smelting process by 85pc compared to the industry average. Rusal plans to turn carbon neutral by 2050 and reduce its total emission by at least 35pc by 2030.
