Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

UAE-based aluminum producer Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has signed a ‘triple-digit mn-euro’ agreement to supply 43,000mt of ‘CelestiAL’ aluminum per annum to German premium car manufacturer Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW), the company said in a statement.

The CelestiAL aluminum is produced using electricity generated at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park located in the desert outside Dubai and operated by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).

Using EGA’s aluminum produced using solar energy is expected to reduce BMW Group’s emissions by 222,000mt of CO2 per year.

EGA’s aluminum will cover almost half the annual requirements of Plant Landshut, BMW’s only production facility for light metal casting in Europe.

In 2020, Plant Landshut produced 2.9mn cast metal components, including engine parts such as cylinder heads and crankcases, parts for electric drive trains, and vehicle body parts.

EGA began production of the ‘CelestiAL’ earlier this year, becoming the first company in the world to commercially produce aluminum using solar power.

The company said that CelestiAL is lightweight, strong, and infinitely recyclable, and that is why it has an important role to play in developing a more sustainable society and making modern life possible.
