PT Dexin Steel Indonesia has launched a continuous casting steel slab facility on Jun 28. The firm expects improved regional competitiveness by adding slabs to its steel products assortment which includes billets, rebar, and wire rod.
Dexin’s first furnace was commissioned in March 2020 and the second almost a year later in February 2021. Crude steel production closed in on 340,000mt with 300,000mt of billets sold in Feb-Jun 2021. The No 2 blast furnace has a 2mn annual capacity.
Both furnaces are anticipated to have a total of 4mn mt in annual production capacity, higher than an initial 3.5mn estimate. The No 3 furnace is anticipated to be commissioned in Q4 2022 to cumulatively move the mill to 6mn mt annual capacity.
Japanese Hanwa owns a 10pc share in Dexin Steel and with the additional slab volumes from the new furnace plans to expand sales domestically in Indonesia and to regional customers in the ASEAN region.
