Daimler AG and Volvo AB plan to manufacture hydrogen fuel batteries for their heavy-vehicle models in Europe by 2025 through their joint venture (JV) Cellcentric.

The companies formed Cellcentric in March to produce zero-emission trucks, and will provide more information on large-scale production by 2022, they noted to the media on Thursday.

Both Daimler and Volvo remain rivals for their truck lineup and aim to test their respective fuel-cell trucks in the next three years before starting mass production by the second half of this decade.

The companies have also called for building 300 hydrogen refueling stations in Europe only for trucks and 1000 by 2030. Li-On batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs) are heavy for long-haul freight trucks, and that’s why hydrogen fuel cells are a more viable alternative.
