The Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) renewed a 101pc anti-dumping duties order on the export price of extruded aluminum products from China in addition to $3 per kilogram in countervailing duties.

According to the CITT decision, unfair dumping of subsidized Chinese aluminum extrusion exports threatened Canadian producers and could result in job layoffs.

In 2007, there had been large scale dumping of subsidized Chinese products at low prices, which directly resulted in 100 employees being laid off at the Metra Aluminum Plant just outside Montreal. Many of these employees weren’t rehired. It also resulted in the plant eliminating the night shift for a decade.

Florian Pellerin, president of United Steelworkers Local 7046, which represents Metra, applauded the renewal of CITT’s anti-dumping order saying that had it been lifted, the plant would have shutdown entirely after more layoffs.
