China’s HBIS group announces a plan to cut carbon emission by 10pc by 2025 and by 30pc by 2030 aiming to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. HBIS’s plan expects the group’s carbon emissions to peak in 2022.


HBIS has invested more than CNY20bn ($3.07bn) for over 430 energy conserving and pollution reduction projects, which includes building the world’s greenest steel mill and the world’s first hydrogen fuel pilot project. HBIS has been leading green steel manufacturing and enhancing its international influences.


In 2020, HBIS built a direct reduction of iron ore (DRI) project fueled by hydrogen-rich gases in Zhang Jiakou, Hebei, adopting a host of green technologies including low-price hydrogen production, direct hydrogen reduction and CO2 removal to achieve low carbon emission and aim at a zero-carbon economy.


HBIS plans to build 3.6mn mt hydrogen metallurgy by the end of China’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025). The first phase of the project will produce 600,000mt steel using coke oven gas and the remaining 3mn mt will use wind and solar energy as well as other renewable energy for electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen.

Last week, HBIS signed an MoU with BHP Billiton to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in steel production by focusing on hydrogen DRI, slag processing and recycling technologies. The two companies will also develop processes to increase the utilization rate of iron ore lump ores.
