China’s ferrous scrap imports jumped 30 times to 327,606mt in the first half of 2021, when compared to 10,482mt in the same period last year, according to the country’s Customs data. 


In June, the country imported 81,227mt of the commodity, up more than 20 times from 3,088mt in the same month of the prior-year period but dropped by 29pc from 114,741mt in May. 


Japan was the largest exporter of ferrous scrap to the country with a 97899pc increase to 65,364mt in June from 67mt in June 2020. South Korea was the second-largest exporter of the commodity to China, with exports more than tripling to 9,733mt from 2,290mt within the same period. Canada emerged as a new exporter in June, recording a total volume of 160mt in June.
