Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Car sales in Russia in August declined by 0.5pc to a total of 137,517 units from the prior year period. From January-August, sales stood at 880,198 units, down 16.9pc from the prior-year period.

The data was released by AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee (AEB) which said markets were volatile since the beginning of the year but recovery during August — when sales were at par with sales from August 2019 — seems to have put an end of the sluggish auto business.

In July, car sales in Russia was up 6.8pc to 141,924 units from the previous year. Compared to July, August sales dipped around 3pc. Russia’s summer month is not a very active one for auto sales, said AEB.

Avtovaz, Kia, Hyundai, Volkswagen and Renault were the top five sellers in Russia, with Volkswagen clocking the highest growth in sales with a 34pc jump to 11,400 units followed by Hyundai as sales rose by 24pc to 17,462 units in August, from the prior-year.

Government aid and incentives will provide a clearer picture in September about the Russian automotive market and its development towards the end of 2020, said AEB.
