New motor vehicle sales in Canada rose by 2.3pc in September on an annual basis to 173,984 units, as the automotive industry recovers from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Data from Statistics Canada (StatCan) indicated that in January-September, new vehicle sales fell short by 33pc to 1.15 million units compared with 1.53 million units in the same period last year. A major part of this decline was witnessed in March and April, during the peak of pandemic-related shutdowns, where sales plummeted to lower than 100,000 units in a month. However, sales in Canada have gradually recovered and are now in the green.

During the first nine months, car sales in the country were valued at C$51.4mn ($39.4mn), compared with a sales value of $6.62mn in the same period of 2019.
