Canada’s new motor vehicle sales increased by 30.8pc to 151,912 units in May 2021 against 116,102 vehicles in May 2020 according to Statistics Canada (StatCan). However, new vehicle sales fell by 8.9pc from 166,709 units in April 2021.
Passenger car sales rose by 22pc to 30,793 units in May compared to 25,210 cars in the same year-ago month and comprised 20.3pc of total vehicle sales during the month compared to 21.7pc in May 2020. Truck sales made up 79.7pc against 78.3pc during the same period under review. Truck sales climbed by 33.3pc to 121,119 units in May from 90,892 in the same month of the previous year.
Of the total vehicles sold, 132,811 or 87.4pc were manufactured in North America in May compared to 87,635 or 75.5pc in the same year-ago month, up 51.6pc annually.
The value of the vehicle sales rose by 32.8pc to CAD6.9bn ($5.5mn) in May against CAD5.2bn in the same month a year ago.
