Light vehicle production in Brazil increased by 29pc between January and August 2021, compared to the first eight months of 2020, the National Association of Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea) noted in its monthly report.

Brazilian automakers produced 1.35 million light vehicles in the first eight months of the year, including cars and light commercial vehicles, compared to 1.04 million assembled in 2020, despite the semiconductor chip shortage, Anfavea indicated.

In the first eight months of 2021, car production grew 23pc, to 1.11 million units from 899,179 manufactured in the same period a year ago. Light commercial vehicles jumped by 65pc to 248,165 units from 150,180 units in the same timeframe.

However, in August chip shortages and the partial stoppages in 11 Brazilian auto factories began weighing on vehicle output, resulting in a 27pc decline to 147,554 units from 201,572 light vehicles produced in August 2020.

Car manufacturing fell by 30pc last month to 119,091 units from 169,052 vehicles in August 2020. Production of light commercial vehicles also fell by 12pc, to 28,463 units from 32,520 in the same period.
