Brazil ferrous scrap exports doubled and reached a  five year high in 2019,  according to the latest data released by the customs department. The country’s exports rose by 96pc to 698,710mt in 2019, from 356,118mt in the prior year. A major portion of exports were in South Asian countries like Bangladesh and India in 2019, as prices were  lower than the same grades of the US origin.  

 

In 2019, Brazil exported 251,344mt ferrous scrap to Bangladesh, up by 91pc from 131,302mt in 2018, followed by  149,393mt in India, 138,590mt in Indonesia and 72,037mt in Pakistan, rising by 129pc, 100pc and 94pc, respectively.  

 

In Dec 2019, Brazil exported 64,367mt of ferrous scrap, up by 150pc from 25,705mt in Dec 2018, but exports dropped from 73,779mt in the prior month. Bangladesh accounted for 38pc of December’s ferrous scrap exports from Brazil,  followed by India, Indonesia and Pakistan which accounted for 24pc, 14pc and 13pc respectively.
