Boliden plans to invest €40mn ($47.7mn) to improve the infrastructure at the Port of Pori in order to improve the handling of concentrates from its Harjavalta smelter in southwest Finland.
The Swedish copper and nickel miner expects the project to continue from 2021 until 2022 and the operations at the port are expected to commence from 2023, it said in a statement on Wednesday.
Boliden’s new project will help it improve productivity and environmental performance. The company added that this investment is well under the year’s budget of €692 mn.
The company had planned to increase Harjavalta’s annual nickel capacity in August 2020 with a €40mn investment. As of 2019, Harjavalta’s copper production was at 146,000mt and nickel production at 25,000mt.
