Swedish metals major Boliden AB has resumed mining operations at its Tara mines, Ireland on Apr 2. Earlier on March 28, the company announced that mining activities were kept on hold as the government of Ireland imposed a 14-day restriction across the country to control the spread of COVID-19. 


Production resumed after discussions with authorities as well as union representatives regarding actions taken to assure a safe working environment considering the virus outbreak. The actions taken by the company were deemed sufficient to safeguard employees and contractors’ health at the mine. 


Tara mines is an underground zinc and lead mine. It is Europe’s largest zinc mine. The mine produces 2.6mn mt of zinc annually. Lead is extracted as a by-product of this mine.
