Boeing has announced that it will restrict the production of the 787 models to its North Charleston, South Carolina, facility by mid-2021.

As the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic continues straining the global aerospace industry, the company will shift production of the 787 away from its Everett, Washington, factory to focus development at a single site in Charleston.

According to Boeing’s Oct 1 news release, the move endeavors to not only lower production numbers but also to the fact that the Everett site’s equipment, used to produce the 787, will become obsolete by mid-2021.

Since the Charleston site specializes in 787-10 production, it will single-handedly produce the 787 in 2021, when the output reaches the pre-pandemic level of six aircraft per month.

The Everett facility will continue producing the rest of Boeing’s model range, comprising the 737, 747, 767, and 777 models.
