Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Global miner BHP Group plans to invest up to $15mn over a period of five years in collaboration with Japanese firm JFE Steel to work on technology for lowering emissions from steelmaking. 

 

According to media reports, the funding is part of BHP’s $400mn emission reduction budget and the effort with JFE will include research into raw materials such as iron ore and coal from Australia to increase the efficiency of blast furnace steelmaking.

 

BHP plans to cut its carbon emissions by 30pc by 2030 and signed a deal with China Baowu last year to explore the use of hydrogen in blast furnaces as well.
