China Baowu Steel Group has granted two contracts to Tenova for upgrading five rolling grinders and two auto loaders at the company’s Baoshan, Shanghai silicon steel plant.
According to a media release by the Italian equipment manufacturer, Baowu will transfer equipment from its stainless-steel plant in Sanmenxia, Henan to the Baoshan plant. Once this is done, new automated equipment will be installed in the former. Tenova also mentioned that Baowu plans to increase the production of silicon steel coils at its Baoshan unit. Baowu had purchased the original equipment in 2008 from Tenova under its Pomini brand.
American steelmaker Nucor has ordered similar equipment from Tenova for its new steel plate mill in Brandenburg, Kentucky.
China’s Baowu Group is one the largest steelmakers in the world, having produced 115mn mt of crude steel in 2020.
