Bangladesh plans to construct a new deep-water terminal at the Port of Payrai in the southern region in three years to ease the pressure on the Chittagong port, the only one to receive imported scrap, both containerized and bulk shipments. Last year, the items surpassed the loading capacity, indicating a need for a new port.

The port was planned as apart of a long-term infrastructure project in 2013. Work on it, however, was delayed as Payra Port Authority was unable to transfer the land required for the deepwater portion.

The dredging work for the construction is slated to start immediately once the Bangladesh government signs a contract with maritime construction company Jan De Nul.
