ArcelorMittal is launching a coke battery at its Gijon, Spain facility on Jan 12, a day after it restarts the plant’s blast furnace No. 2.

A second battery is scheduled to commence production by the end of April and the entire facility is expected to operate at full capacity by June. By bringing the coke battery online on Sunday, the steelmaker will begin reducing its reliance on external coke consumption, although it won’t significantly dissipate until the battery reaches expected output levels.

The Gijon plant’s coke is predominantly supplied by ArcelorMittal Poland’s Zaklady Koksownicze Zdzieszowice (ZKZ) plant.
