Algerian-Qatari Steel (AQS) has completed the installation of an integrated steel mill consisting of two rolling mills and one wire rod mill along with two electric-arc furnaces (EAFs) in Jijel, Algeria.

Equipment contractor Danieli shared details of the new steel complex in a recent media release, noting that both the EAFs were fired up by Oct 27, and that the casting and rolling mills are now in hot charge mode, ready to begin steel longs output.

The new plant has three operating parts, two rebar rolling mills which are capable of producing tubular downstream products of 8-40mm in diameter, at a combined annual capacity of 1.5mn mt of steel. It also has a 5.5-2x16mm wire rod mill with a capacity of 500,000mt per year.

Since Danieli has been the sole contractor of all equipment and installation, the machinery is packed with automation technology such as the five-strand casters to cast 150mm billets, which are fed to the mills.
