Demand for steel rebar could increase in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh with the state government’s upcoming mega project to provide housing for lower-income groups.

 

The state government is planning to build around 3mn houses in the next few years, with a target of building around 1.5mn houses in the first phase. The construction for the first phase has already started and is scheduled to be completed by June 2022.

 

State-owned RINL or Vizag steel is aiming to be a major supplier for the housing project. The consumption of steel could be more than 0.7mn mt in each phase, according to RINL’s director DK Mohanty.

 

Recently, the RINL’s first shipment of around 2,000mt steel was delivered at Denduluru, which was dispatched from its Vijayawada stock yard. The company expects to receive more orders in the upcoming weeks.
